Very simply, direct selling involves the person-to-person sale of a product or service in a location
other than a retail store.  This can be done through a one-on-one demonstration or in a group
selling environment, most commonly referred to as a “party.”  Most of these sales take place in a
home.  As you would expect, the Internet is also increasing in importance.
The advantage of direct selling is the ability to physically
demonstrate the features and benefits of a company’s products.
Many products that are sold through direct selling would simply
sit on the retail shelf because they require some level of
explanation and demonstration.  This is particularly important in
our product category, specialty gourmet food, where customers
WANT to try products before they buy them.

Another important aspect of direct selling is the role of personal
endorsements.  When customers hear from people that they
know and trust, people like you, they will be more likely to try
something new.
